Double Cleansing: Is It Worth Adding To Your Skincare Routine?
You have probably heard about the term double cleansing and might be thinking “is it cleansing your skin twice in a row?” We all know that cleansing is one of the most important skincare steps, the foundation of your skincare routine, but is it necessary to do it twice?
We understand that adding another step to your skincare routine might feel like a chore but come along with us and discover how double cleansing can change your skin.
What Is Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing just as its name suggests is cleansing your skin twice in a row. To perfect the double cleansing method, you will need two different types of cleanser. One oil-based cleanser or balm breaks down natural oils, makeup, and sunscreen, and another, water-based cleanser formulated for your skin type or concerns to deeply clean and wash away remaining residue.
What Are The Benefits Of Double Cleansing?
Remember, cleansing is the most important step in your skincare regimen – so doing a half-hearted job will only waste your time and money when it comes to your other products. Not only is a double cleanse meant to give a more thorough cleanse, but it can also revitalize dull skin and allow other skin care products to penetrate more effectively.
After cleansing, have you ever wiped your skin with a cotton pad saturated with toner to find it still discolored? Clients often think that a toner is supposed to take the leftover residue after cleansing but that is not true, a toner is not the second step of your cleansing routine. It’s the first treatment step. So, this is the proof that we need some adjustments to our cleansing protocol to give the best chance for our skin.
Some of the TOP benefits of double cleansing include:
Breaks down sebum, makeup, and SPF: As oil dissolves in oil double cleansing ensures a proper removal. It is essential to properly wash off all makeup, SPF, sweat, and any environmental toxins to allow the skin to rest, rejuvenate, and provide a clean slate to receive other skin care products you apply.
Prevents sebum buildup and bacteria: A double cleanse can help prevent sebum buildup and the bacteria that can cause acne and breakouts. Double cleansing washes away these impurities and prevents clogging of the pores
Removes pollutants: if you are living in a city like us in New York, double cleansing is especially important. We are exposed to a high level of pollutants every day. Pollutants can potentially contribute to aging and discoloration, which let’s be honest none of us wants!
Improves the efficacy of other skincare products: Double cleansing not only leaves your skin super clean but allows your other skincare products to penetrate and work more effectively, therefore providing better results.
Which Skin Concerns Benefit Most From Double Cleansing?
Double cleansing can be helpful for all skin types, even sensitive skin, but it's most beneficial for people with oily or acne prone skin, or if you wear make up every day.
Will Double Cleansing Help If You Don’t Wear Makeup?
Absolutely. Oil based cleansers get rid of any sunscreen residue (which you should be wearing every day) and other oil based substances that might have built up on your skin during the day. Doing so, your second cleanser doesn’t need to fight through those layers and is able to effectively address your skin.
How To Double Cleanse At Home
Double cleansing should be done at night since that is when you have excess buildup on your skin. The method is the same for everyone; it's the cleansers you choose that must be for your unique skin type and concern. You will need a pre-cleansing oil or cleansing balm and a water-based cleanser.
On dry skin massage a small amount of pre-cleansing oil into your skin with your fingers.
Use gentle, circular movements and alternate between cheeks, under-eyes, forehead and chin. The massage should last for a minute at least. (halfway through you can add a couple drops of water)
Rinse off with lukewarm water or a thin cotton pad that you have soaked in water.
While your skin is still damp after patting dry from the first wash, apply the water-based cleanser; the same quantity as the first one can be used.
Use circular motions for a couple of minutes
Wash off with lukewarm water and pat your face and neck dry
PS: Environ has a product, Hydrating Clay Masque, that can take your double cleansing experience to the next level especially if you are dealing with blackheads and congestion. The Kaolin Clay in this product assists in the absorption of excess oil while refining the texture through micro-exfoliation as it removes dead skin cells. You can add this product twice a week to your cleansing routine. Use pre-cleansing oil as suggested above first then apply the Hydrating Clay Masque for 10 to 15 minutes and remove it with your current cleanser.
Picking A Cleanser Based On Your Skin Type
Cleansers without sulfates and neutral pH can ensure that the skin is not dried out further.
Dry and sensitive skin types should use a mild, cream-based cleanser, (mild cleansing lotion) while oiler and problematic skin can use a foaming cleanser with active ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. (cleansing complex, Sebu-wash) If you have a combination skin find a balancing lightweight cleanser that retains moisture while controlling oils. (low foam cleanser)
