How to Use Retinol: Achieve the Best Results
Retinol is often labeled as the Holy Grail of skincare for all the right reasons. But what exactly is retinol, and how does it differ from tretinoin, retinaldehyde or retinyl palmitate? Yes, we know, it can be very confusing.
If you previously tried retinoids but thought they weren’t for you because of the side effects, stay with us, we have some good news for you. Almost everyone can use retinoids, you just need to find the right formulation for your skin.
What Is Retinol?
Retinol is a type of retinoid, a derivative of Vitamin A which is known to help the skin in more ways than one. Vitamin A is the only known molecule that helps keep the skin healthy and provides anti-aging benefits. While most people are under the impression that retinol is an exfoliant, it is actually a powerful antioxidant.
The Benefits Of Using Retinol In Your Skincare Routine
Although Tretinoin (a form of Vitamin A) initially was used for acne in the 60’s, it is now widely known for its anti-aging benefit of the skin. Vitamin A is the ultimate skincare ingredient. It boosts collagen production, reduces fine lines and wrinkles, and helps with pigmentation. It encourages cell turnover which helps with texture and clogged pores.
Retinol or any derivative of Vitamin A:
Normalizes cell function. It has the ability to influence cells to behave in a younger, healthier way
Increases cell turnover which improves acne, acne scarring, fine lines and wrinkles
Improves problematic skin conditions by decreasing oil production
Helps the appearance of pigmentation, sun damage, and age spot by normalizing melanin production
Improves the texture of the skin by assisting in the promotion of healthy collagen and elastin formation
Supports the skin immune system
How To Get The Best Results From Retinol
When we talk about retinol, we are actually talking about retinoids, the umbrella term for Vitamin A. Retinol is one of the four types of retinoids commonly used in today’s skincare (retinyl palmitate, retinol, retinaldehyde and retinoic acid). While they are all derived from Vitamin A with similar benefits, they are not the same. There are key differences between them, in particular how well you tolerate them. Retinoids get a bad rep because it can cause some skin irritation, but by finding the right formulation and frequency of application it can be avoided.
We already established that every skin type can benefit from Vitamin A, so let’s learn which is the best type for you. The easiest way to look at retinoids is on a scale of intensity.
Retinoic acid is the only form our skin can utilize, and all other forms of retinoids must go through a conversion process. The number of steps of this conversion process that controls the intensity and the side effects. Retinoic acid is only available on prescription.
Retinol goes through a two-step conversion, while retinaldehyde goes through one. They are gentler versions but may still cause skin irritations.
Retinyl Palmitate goes through a three-step conversion which makes this form of retinoids the least irritating. The least process of conversion the faster it works but the more irritating and drying it gets!
Steps For Incorporating Retinol Into Your Skincare Routine
It is essential that you give your skin a chance to get used to retinol. It is best to introduce retinol creams or serums slowly to minimize or avoid any side effects. The most common mistake people make is to start using it every night. The goal is not to use it every day, but to use it consistently. Some people may never be able to use it every day, but that’s okay! It will still give you the benefits you’re looking for.
How Often You Should Use Retinol
Start by applying a pea-sized amount twice a week for the first two weeks and pair it with a moisturizer. If there is no irritation, you can gradually increase the number of days each week until you reach a comfortable level. If you are using a prescription Retinol / Tretinoin – especially if you have sensitive skin – you can apply a small amount of moisturizer first to dilute it a little.
Most retinoids are not photo-stable, and sunlight can reduce its effectiveness, so it should only be applied at night. Even without the use of retinol, you should use SPF 30 or higher daily, but it is more necessary as retinol can make the skin more sensitive.
The Best Products To Combine With Retinol
Dryness and irritation is often caused by impaired barrier function, so pairing your retinol with hydrating and nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, glycerin and ceramides can alleviate these problems and make your skin glowy.
It is a common misconception that you can’t use AHA/BHA and Retinoids in the same routine. Yes, it is true that if it is not used correctly it can cause irritation but when used properly, they can actually complement each other. We advise using them on alternate nights or in moderation.
How Long It Takes To See Results From Using Retinol
The visible effect of retinol will depend on your skin and the products you are using. Retinol is known to deliver results in as little as six weeks, but on average it can take up to twelve weeks to see visible results. It’s worth it to stick it out and be consistent!
