Dermaplaning: Myths, Truths, Benefits, and More!

If you’ve heard the hype about dermaplaning you may have wondered why everyone is positively raving about shaving their faces? Out of all the skincare treatments, dermaplaning is probably the most confusing. It is vastly known as “face shaving” when in reality, is a professional exfoliating treatment that also removes vellus hair as a positive side effect.

What Is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a safe and effective physical exfoliation method that uses a sterile surgical blade to eliminate dead skin cells and to remove unwanted vellus hairs. (aka peach fuzz).

While this non-invasive treatment does indeed do an excellent job of eliminating vellus hairs it does a whole lot more for your complexion than you might assume.

What Are The Benefits Of Dermaplaning?

One of the most cited benefits of this treatment is the glowy, rejuvenated appearance it gives to clients. While the skin immediately takes on a smoother and more youthful look, dermaplaning also offers several other benefits as well.

·   Removes dead skin cells and vellus hairs

·   Softens the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

·   Stimulates skin cell turnover

·   Increase product absorption and efficacy (they will work better)

·   Assist in improving uneven pigmentation such as sunspots and PIH

·   Improve the appearance of acne scars

·   It allows smoother makeup application

·   Prevent clogged pores and pimples from forming

·   Great alternative for sensitive skin and during pregnancy

Are There Any Contraindications For Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is safe for nearly all skin types and can also be performed on clients who are pregnant or nursing. There are only a few instances when dermaplaning might not be the right treatment for you. These include:

·   Inflamed acne

·   Active cold sore

·   Flared eczema / dermatitis

·   Open lesion

·   Skin cancer

Common Myths Associated With Dermaplaning Treatments

Dermaplaning isn’t just gaining traction within celebrities and beauty influencers, but it is also the second most requested treatment at JE’DERM as well. Like all popular treatments, dermaplaning has its fair share of misconceptions and we are here to set them straight.

The 5 myths below are the ones we are asked the most about.

Your Hair Grow Back Darker Or Thicker

This is probably the most common dermaplaning myth. The vellus hairs we have on our face are thin and soft. It is biologically impossible to alter the structure of the hair by “cutting” them off the surface. Shaving simply creates a blunt tip on the hair which when it grows, some might interpret as “thicker”. We assure you as soon as it grows out it’s going to feel just as soft as before.

Dermaplaning Causes Breakouts

It’s actually quite the opposite. While dermaplaning cannot be performed on active acne it can prevent breakouts rather than causing them. The gentle exfoliation prevents dead skin cells and oil from getting trapped into the pores and allowing acne treatments and serums to penetrate deeper.

Dermaplaning Hurts

We understand that the idea of a sharp blade skating across your face can be unsettling, however there is no need to worry. Dermaplaning is a completely painless process especially when you compare it to other hair removal or exfoliating services. Some might even call it relaxing.

Dermaplaning at home as effective as professional dermaplaning

There are tinkle razors or at-home kits for sure. However, the devices used in these kits cannot be compared to the professional medical grade blade we use. While at home razors may remove hair from your face, professional dermaplaning as we learned is more than just a “shave” it’s a resurfacing treatment. Tinkle razors will not remove dead skin cells or give you as close of a “shave” as a professional blade can give. We often see breakouts with tinkle razors on clients because there is sanitation issue as well, as how the blade hits the hair can irritate the follicles.

If I Get Dermaplaning I’ll Need To Continue Doing It Forever

Getting a dermaplaning treatment doesn’t mean you are committing yourself to a lifetime of treatments. After 4-5 weeks the hairs will go back just as they were before. You can decide to get it done once, just on occasion or regularly, it is totally up to you.

However, after seeing how removing the dead skin cells and vellus hairs improves the skin’s brightness and texture you might be hooked. Don’t say we didn’t warn you.

What Can You Expect During A Dermaplaning Appointment?

Apart from physically removing dead skin cells and vellus hairs, a dermaplaning treatment at JE’DERM skin atelier includes an enzyme peel and LED light therapy, finished with serum, moisturizer, and SPF. It can also be added to our Signature Bespoke Facial as well!
