What Are Facial Extractions? An Essential Part of Your Facial Treatment

The implications and potential damage from picking and popping at blackheads and breakouts leave our skin in a more vulnerable, irritated state. Impacted pores are common, and during a facial appointment, your esthetician will talk with you about extractions and blackhead removal. So let’s dive in.

What Are Facial Extractions?

There are endless benefits to going in for a facial appointment. Facial extractions support the removal of dead skin cells, excess sebum and oils. Outside of being a godsend, the process clears out compacted or inflamed pores via a mechanism or manually, with hands.

The Benefits Of Facial Extractions During Your Facial

Facial time is the best time for you to relax and let the professionals handle everything else. During your facial appointment, your skin will be deeply cleansed, your pores will be softened, and it makes for the perfect moment to sneak into those pesky clogged pores.

Extractions can even act as a preventative, warding off future breakouts and delivering you a clear, healthy complexion.

What To Expect During The Treatment

During your treatment your esthetician will utilize different modalities, enzymes may be applied with steam to soften the skin and prepare for an easier extraction. As your pores begin to open up, your esthetician will utilize a bright light, known as a magnifying lamp to see those nitty-gritty details of your face, and target areas of most concern.

While wearing gloves, your esthetician will place pressure on all sides of the impacted pore to begin the extraction process. In some cases, a metal instrument may be used instead, or in addition to manual extraction. Following extractions, high frequency may be applied over the extracted area to kill bacteria and calm the skin. At JE’DERM skin atelier we always use Oxygen treatment after extractions to help the skin heal faster. Bacteria are unable to thrive in the presence of oxygen. A calming and soothing mask is applied after the oxygen treatment to further calm the skin, reduce redness and heal the blemishes.

Can Both Blackheads And Whiteheads Be Extracted?

If you’re wondering what the standard for extractions looks like, you’re not alone. In many cases, a pore that has developed into a whitehead may need to be opened before extraction can occur. In this case, your esthetician may utilize a tool and motion just like a pin prick to open up those pores and clean them out.

Both blackheads and whiteheads can be taken care of during your facial appointment.

When To Seek Facial Extractions

It might be tricky to know when seeking facial extractions is best. If you’re noticing that blackheads are popping up more frequently, extraction is a great opportunity to alleviate those pores. When it comes to healthy skin, consistency is key. That's why we recommend a regular, monthly facial.

Your skin is one of the most important organs connected to your body. Attempting extractions on your own without the proper knowledge and guidance of a professional puts you at risk for further skin concerns. You don’t want to deal with an infection, so leave extractions to the professionals!

When Can A Blemish Be Safely Extracted?

The best time to extract blackheads or whiteheads is if they are not inflamed. Attempting to extract a blemish that is under the skin or extra inflamed can leave your skin scarred and struggling to repair.

Should You Ever Attempt DIY Extractions Yourself?

We’re living in the DIY era and doing it yourself can be a liberating, creative experience. We know it’s tough to wake up and catch a big fat pimple in your reflection. And somehow, they always seem to appear at the most inconvenient moments of our lives.

While you may be tempted to do everything in your power to remove it or reduce its appearance, you need a sterile environment to avoid unwanted side effects. It’s not recommended to perform extractions on your own.

Facial Extraction Aftercare

After your facial treatment you want to apply a mild moisturizer, preferably fragrance free, to soothe and calm the skin. Depending on your skin, after extraction, blemishes may take around a week to heal. The healing process directly correlates to the depth and severity of the blemishes.

Keep Up Your At-Home Routine To Help Prevent Breakouts

The best thing to do between facial appointments is to keep up with your at-home skin care routine. Cleansed, exfoliated, and hydrated skin with proper treatments limit the possibility of whiteheads and blackheads from appearing.

Skin care and accompanying treatments can sound way more complex and overwhelming than they actually are. If you find yourself in a whirlwind, slow down. Ask your esthetician for a little guidance and reassurance. You can contact JE’DERM skin atelier with any questions you may have about facials, and book an appointment!
